Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th of the Navaratri festival. It is also termed as Vijaya Dashami. Dussehra comes on the tenth day or Dashami of Ashwin month according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Dussehra is mainly focused on rejoicing in the epic victory Lord Rama over the demon king Ravan.
The holy Hindu text “The Ramayana,” tells that Lord Rama’s wife Sita was kidnapped by the 10-headed demon king Ravan who transported her to Sri Lanka. Lord Rama sent a message to Ravan for the return of Sita, which was denied. Lord Rama travelled to Sri Lanka for retrieval of Sita via fighting with Ravan. Lord Rama was supported and accompanied by his brother Lakshmana, and Lord Hanuman—the monkey king who had the ability to fly too.
With the help of his soldiers and fighters Rama managed to construct a bridge across the ocean and fight a blood-stained battle against Ravan. The bridge thus built still exists, as a Hindu legend says, off the coast of Dhanuskodi in Tamil Nadu.

The fight was very long and tiresome. To fight with Ravan was a fight of nerves as Ravan had 10 heads with a lot of power and strength in his body. Ultimately, after a show of exceptional courage and skill Lord Rama stabbed Ravan’s body with a burst of arrows. Thus, he defeated Ravan with the help of a powerful celestial tool which was created by Lord Brahma and got his wife Sita back.
Therefore, Dusshera for Hindu is a blessed time which is best to revive and renew their faith in the power of good over evil.
